The Florida Gators have opened the 2013 season strong and are ranked #7 in the NSCAA Division I women’s rankings. At 2-0 in league play, they have gotten a jump on the rest of the SEC in league play[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’].
The Gators share the SEC lead with the Georgia Bulldogs, also off to a 2-0 start in conference play and 9-1-0 overall
South Carolina, Ole Miss and Kentucky can also be found among the nation’s top 25, nationally ranked #22, #24 and #25, respectively.
With the conference regular season just getting underway, only Auburn, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt are without SEC wins.
Arkansas at 8-2-0 overall, is off to its best-ever start, and was nationally ranked earlier in the season.
SEC Individual Weekly Awards
Georgia’s Laura Eddy was named Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the second goal in a 2-1 SEC win over South Carolina. It was her first goal since 2010 after sitting out the past two seasons with injuries.
Offensive honors the previous week went to Kentucky freshman Arin Gilliland who had six points in the Wildcats’ 4-2 win on the road at #19 West Virginia. She scored 10 seconds into the match and added a PK in the second half.
Eddy’s Georgia teammate Caitlin Woody was the SEC Defensive Player of the Week as she posted her seventh shutout of the season in goal for the Bulldogs. The previous defensive winner was South Carolina junior Christa Neary after leading USC to 1-0 shutout wins over East Carolina and South Florida.
Freshman of the Week honors went to Florida’s Savannah Jordan, who turned in her fourth multi-goal match of the season. She has four goals on the season. Georgia’s Marion Crowder who had five goals in two games, four against the College of Charleston, earned the freshman award the previous week..
