The Dukes are 8-3-0, one win more than 7-3-0 Hofstra. JMU won its fourth consecutive game, and third straight shutout with a 2-0 win over Longwood in non-conference action.
Freshman Sydney Braun-McLeod (Ontario, Canada) broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 62nd minute, her second score of the season[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’]. Meghan Cox, a freshman from Springfield, Va. who had assisted on the earlier goal, scored the Dukes’ second for the final 2-0 advantage.
Towson’s Emily Banes and Delaware’s Shannon Kearney shared CAA Player of the Week honors as teams moved from non-conference play to the conference portion of the regular season.
Banes scored a pair of goals, including a game-winner, as Towson won back-to-back road games for the first time since 1999. She struck the winning goals as the Tigers edged St. Francis (Pa.) 2-1 and scored in a 3-0 victory at LIU Brooklyn.
Banes, a senior from Bethpage, NY, leads the CAA and is fourth nationally in goals (10) and fifth in points (23). She shared POW honors with Kearney, who also scored two goals in a pair of wins for the Blue Hens.
CAA Rookie of the Week honors went to UNC Wilmington’s Lissa Rahkola (Finland), a freshman goalkeeper.
Rahkola made five saves and didn’t allow a goal in 166:28 of action in Seahawks wins over Coastal Carolina and Francis Marion.
In the previous week, Rahkola’s UNCW teammate, sophomore forward Maddie McCormick was selected CAA Player of the Week after scoring three goals with an assist in the Seahawks’ two victories while winning the UNCW Courtyard Marriott Wilmington Invitational.
She was named MVP of the tournament, leading the Seahawks to wins over Longwood and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
While McCormick was earning POW honors, the Rookie of the Week selection was JMU’s freshman forward Ashley Herndon. The Ashburn native had a goal and an assist in JMU’s 3-2 win at Charlotte, Her three goals and seven points lead the Dukes scoring.
