Coastal Carolina may have an argument with the South Carolina Gamecocks about who has the biggest rooster in the Palmetto State. The Chanticleers are ranked #20 nationally after four weeks, and are likely to move up in the next Division I men’s poll.
And bragging rights, for at least this year, were settled when Coastal defeated the Gamecocks 3-1 on Sept. 10. The Chants, who opened the season with a 1-0 win over Wake Forest, are working on a four-game win streak with two of its last three wins against top-15 ranked opponents[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’].
It’s too early in the season to determine the frontrunner for the Big South men’s championship and the automatic berth in postseason play, as Campbell, Coastal and Gardner-Webb are the only three teams with conference victories.
However, what is not good news for the rest of the Big South teams is one important statistic. Coastal Carolina last lost a Big South regular season game on Oct. 27, 2010.
Campbell’s 3-2 win over VMI is the Camels (1-5-0) only victory this season. However, the Camels have not been playing weak opponents. They dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime to UNC Chapel Hill, and then fell 3-0 to Charlotte.
Winthrop, at 5-0-1, is the last unbeaten team in the conference. The Eagles are only five wins away from the program’s 400th victory.
The Eagles have spread the offense around this year, with 10 of the last 11 goals scored this season have been scored by a different players.
The Liberty Flames snapped a two-game losing streak when Sam Duininck’s header in the 71st minute propelled them to a 1-0 win over the American University Eagles. The goal was the senior defender’s first of the season.

High Point, which knocked UNC Greensboro out of the ranks of the unbeatens and out of the national rankings with a 3-0 victory, has struggled to a 2-4 start. One bright spot has been the play of junior Mamadee Nyepon, who had six goals in five games and leads the Big South in all offensive categories.
Coastal Carolina sophomore goalkeeper Devin Cook was the league’s Defensive Player of the Week after posting a 4-0 shutout over Presbyterian and a 1-0 clean sheet over then #5 ranked Virginia Commonwealth.
