To say that the Wofford Terriers got off to a shaky start in 2013 is an understatement.
Not many outside of the Wofford program were likely to have been surprised. The Terriers won only twice last year in SoCon play and were picked to finish next to last in 2013.
It wasn’t until the seventh match of the season that Coach Ralph Polson’s squad got its first win, a 4-1 decision over Liberty[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’].
Up until then it had been four losses and scoreless ties against Newberry College and Saint Joseph’s University.
Since that first victory, the Terriers have won eight of their last 10, including a six-game winning streak. Their only Southern Conference setback was a 3-2 loss to Appalachian State on the road in Boone.
They rebounded from that loss with a 5-1 victory over UNC Greensboro.
Senior defender Billy Padula (Irmo, SC) had a pair of assists in the win over the Spartans, breaking the Wofford single-season record for assists (nine) for the Division I era (since 1995).
The former Irmo HS stndout previously held the record with eight, which he set last year. The five goals were the most Wofford has ever scored in a Southern Conferencematch.
The Terriers, 4-1 in SoCon action, are at the top of the league standings with three regular seasons left to play. Before the win over UNCG, Wofford registered a huge 2-1 victory over #16 Elon at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, SC.
Junior defender Forrest Lasso (Raleigh, NC) scored the game-winner in the 95th minute in overtime, and freshman goalkeeper Garrett Closs (Frisco, TX) saved the game with a penalty kick save in the 89th minute of the second half.
Sophomore Connor Davis (Roswell, Ga.) leads the team in scoring with 22 points on nine goals and four assists.
