The West Florida Argonauts came into the 2013 season as the defending NCAA Division II national champions.
They only lost once in 2012, and they haven’t lost since then. The streak started on Oct. 12, 2012 with a 4-0 win over West Georgia. UWF has outscored opponents 69-10 over that run.
The Argos broke the school record by extending their unbeaten streak to 26 consecutive matches without a loss with a 4-0 win over Christian Brothers. It was their seventh straight win and clinched the regular season Gulf South Conference championship.
It was also the 18th shutout over the unbeaten streak.[show_to]
That left UWF with 10-0-3 overall mark, and moved the Argos back into the top 5 in the national rankings.
Senior Chelsea Palmer (Plano, TX) did what she does best, scoring two goals and assisting on the other two.
“We’re pleased with that,” said UWF coach Joe Bartlinski, about breaking the record and clinching the title. “But more importantly, we have senior day on Sunday, which is an exciting time to celebrate with our upperclassmen, and that’ll help us focus on our next opponent.”
Palmer has been scoring big goals for the Argos ever since Bartlinski recruited her out of Tyler Junior College. She has 15 points, seven assists and four goals, in her last four games. Overall, she leads the team in scoring with eight goals.
A year ago she scored the winning goal in the national championship game, was named championship Most Valuable Player and NCAA Division II All-America.
The Gulf South Conference record for consecutive games without a loss is 29 set by Christian Brothers University from 2002-03. UWF has two more regular season games before playing in the conference tournament, Nov. 7-10.
There have been three draws this season for the Argos, a pair of 1-1 ties with Valdosta State and with Armstrong Atlantic, and a scoreless draw against Florida Southern. The Valdosta draw was in conference play.
The Gulf South Conference tournament will be hosted by West Florida and will be played at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola. The natonal championship semifinals and finals will be held in Evans, Ga, at Blanchard Park, and will be hosted by the Peach Belt Conference.
“It’s an exciting time,” said Bartlinski.
Peach Belt Honors
Clayton State swept the Peach Belt Conference weekly individual honors on Oct. 21. Alecia Robinson was named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week, while teammate Emily Walling was named PBC Defender of the Week. The Goalkeeper of the Week award also went to a Laker, with Clayton State’s Charlotte McCormack selected.
The trio were honored for their efforts in wins over nationally-ranked North Georgia and Columbus State.
