The Warhawks of Auburn Montgomery started the season 2-4. Things just were not clicking.
And then they did. Eight wins later coach Wulf Koch’s club had a 10-4 record and was ranked #7 in the Oct. 22 NAIA men’s national poll.
Win #10 was a 2-1 decision over rival Mobile with both goals scored by junior Elvar Sigurdsson, one of four players from Iceland on the AUM roster.[show_to]
It was also a coaching milestone for Koch, giving him his 200th win as a collegiate men’s head coach.
He sports a career men’s record of 200-139-22, with 89 of those victories coming at AUM, where he has coached the past six seasons. He also has 71 victories as a women’s head coach.
Who would have thought after starting 2-4 on the season we would be sitting at 10-4,” Koch said. “This streak is a tribute to the amount of work and effort that these guys put in every training session.”
The win over Mobile was a welcome result.
“Mobile is one of our rivals and has dominated us over the last two sea- sons,” said Koch. “They have scored alotofgoalsonusinthelasttwo matches, so it is nice to finally get them at our place.”
Sigurdsson leads the Warhawks in scoring with 23 points, on eight goals and a team-high seven assists. Alan Harvell (Birmingham, Ala.) also has eight goals and is second in points with 20.
After the Mobile win, senior All American goalkeeper Vignir Johannsson, by way of Iceland, was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Southern States Ath- letic Conference. It was his second Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.
In the win over Mobile and a 3-0 shutout of Spring Hill, Johannesson made 10 saves. He has allowed only 16 goals in 16 matches.
