On player who hasn’t been heard from in this World Cup cycle was the one expected to anchor the defense. Steve Cherundolo, a fixture at right back in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, has spent the last 11 months on the sidelines[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’]. Captain of Hannover 96 in the German Bundesliga, he went down last December with a knee injury that required surgery. Months of rehab almost got him back on the field, then a series of setbacks kept him out of the USA’s run to Brazil. In a Q&A with US Soccer, Cherundolo spoke about his goal of making the USA’s 23-player World Cup roster.
“Yes, I think it should be the goal of every player in the pool. Anybody who has ever been to a World Cup knows how special it is, how awesome it is.
“If that’s something I have a chance to participate in, if I can help the team and the coaching staff deems me that guy who can help either on the field or off the field then I would love to go to Brazil. It’s definitely a goal of mine and if I can stay healthy it’s something I can achieve as well.”
