Florida State went to Blacksburg, Va., having never lost to the Virginia Tech Hokies, who are ranked #4 nationally.
The Seminoles, ranked #3, left Blacksburg with that record intact after a 2-1 victory on Dagney Brynjarsdottir’s 87th minute game-winner.[show_to]
FSU, which ran its season record to 14-0-3 overall and 9-0-2 in the ACC, is now 13-0-1 all-time against the Hokies.
“The winning goal was quite nice,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian, which came off a cross from Carson Pickett (Fleming Island, FL) that the junior midfielder from Iceland put away for her ninth goal of the season and fifth game-winner.
“We know that Carson has the abil- ity to serve good balls and Dagney is quite imposing in and around the box. She is getting better and better and I though the sequence that led to the goal was quite nice.’
Florida State improved to 5-0-1 against ranked opponents this season and three of those wins have come against top five opponents.
The game-winner also marked the 11th time this year that FSU has reg- istered a goal after the 80th minute, including the eighth time in which a goal has given the ‘Noles the lead for good or tied up a match.
“We walk away feeling good that we came into Blacksburg leaving with three points,” added Krikorian. “Quite frankly the better team did not win tonight.
“Virginia Tech was better than we were for a vast majority of the game. But credit to our kids for hanging in there, being resilient and continuing to compete and finding a way to win. Through the course of play we weren’t as good as we needed to be.”
Virginia Tech outshot the ‘Noles 12-5 and held a 9-0 advantage on corner kicks. Five shots was a season low for FSU.
Earlier this month FSU survived a trip to Syracuse, NY, when Brynjarsdottir’s golden goal in the first overtime period handed the Orange a 1-0 loss.
Brynjarsdottir has been the go-to goalscorer. Her nine goals is best on the team, two more than fellow Icelander Berglind Thorvald-sdottir.
Brynjarsdottir, a very experienced midfielder, has earned 34 caps as a member of Iceland’s full national team., scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands to lead Ice- land into the quarterfinals of the 2013 Euro Women’s Championship in Sweden.
It marked the first time Iceland had ever reached the quarterfinals in that tournament.
