With two games left in the regular season, the Young Harris College Mountain Lions have already wrapped up the Peach Belt Conference regular season championship.
It is a first for Young Harris, in a season of firsts. Going into the final two conference games to complete the regular season, the Mountain Lions are 7-0-0 in conference play.
An overall 13-1-0 record has them ranked #3 nationally in the Oct. 22 NSCAA Division II poll.
Young Harris is coming off PBC wins over Lander (2-1) and UNC Pembroke (5-2).
Senior Niall McCabe led the charge with four goals and three assists in those two wins. He became the 12th player in conference history to put up four goals in one match, that coming against Pembroke.
Actually, he played a part in every goal scored against the Braves. He assisted on the other goal in that game and also assisted on both goals against Lander.
McCabe, a native of Dublin, Ireland, now leads the PBC in assists with 14, and is third in the conference in points (32) and fourth in goals (9).
Not only was he honored by the Peach Belt Conference as Player of the Week, he was selected National Player of the Week by the NSCAA. It is the first time in program history that a Young Harris soccer player has received the weekly award from the NSCAA.
He was also named the Young Harris College Mountain Lion Athlete of the Week, an honor that covers all Young Harris athletic teams.
The Mountain Lions are on an 11-match winning streak, going back to their only loss of the year on Sept. 11 when they dropped a 2-1 double overtime decision to Anderson on the road.
