Shocker In The NAIA
Juan Madrigal slipped a shot into the back of the net with less than a minute left in double overtime as the #23 Martin Methodist (Tenn.) men stunned #2 Belhaven (Miss). Belhaven is the defending NAIA national champion. After 119 minutes of scoreless play, it appeared as if the two teams would settle for a draw in a critical Southern States Athletic Conference showdown.
But with just 46 seconds remaining, Madrigal took a pass from Kenneth Monge and slotted it into the back of the net, lifting the RedHawks to their biggest regular-seson win in progrm history. Martin Methodist ws coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to #16 William Carey (Miss.)
450th Win For Berson
University of South Carolina men’s head coach Mark Berson earned his 450th collegiate coaching victory at USC when his Gamecocks upset #25 New Mexico 1-0 in OT on a 92nd minute goal from Eli Dent (Charleston, SC). Berson became the eighth Division I coach all time to reach the 450-win milestone. He is only the fourth head coach in NSCAA Division I history to post 450 wins at one institution. Berson is the only men’s head soccer coach in the history of the USC program.
Atlantic Sun Conference
Despite two losses in conference play, East Tennessee State has taken over first place in the Atlantic Sun men’s standings after a 4-1 win over USC Upstate. Florida Gulf Coast and Northern Kentucky, both 4-1-1, are tied for second place.
The FGCU Eagles saw their 11-match unbeaten streak against conference opponents broken in a 2-1 loss to Stetson. The Eagles have won three straight regular season championships FGCU also drew 0-0 with Mercer.
Jacksonville goalkeeper Guilherme Brandao and Stetson midfielder Andreas Schnabi received A-Sun Player of the Week honors.
South Atlantic Conference
The SAC championship men’s & women’s finals will be streamed on NSCAATV. The matches take place on Nov. 10 from Rock Hill, SC. The men’s final begins at 1:00 pm, followed by the women’s championship game.
