#3 Ranked Houston Unbeaten
It is 21 games into the 2013 TSSAA girls soccer season, and three more to go for Coach David Wolff’s Houston High School Mustangs, who are currently ranked #3 nationally.
The Houston girls have yet to lose and take a 20-0-1 record into the quarterfinal round of the Class AAA state tournament in Murfreesboro at Richard Siegel Soccer Complex.
A 1-1 draw with St. George’s back on Sept. 25, has been the only bump in the road. That tie came right after word came out that the Mustangs were ranked #1 in the NSCAA Fall Girls High School National poll.[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’]
The Mustangs are drawn against Oakland HS, a local Murfreesboro team that punched their ticket to the state quarters with a 1-0 win over Warren County. They did it on a goal by sophomore A.B. Hawkins.
Houston comes into the state tournament on a 10-game winning streak after winning the Region 8-AAA championship for the seventh consecutive year. This year they beat #7 Collierville 3-0 for the district title.
And don’t believe this year’s Houston team is unusually good. The school’s junior varsity was 16-0-2 and the freshman had a 5-0-0 season. The varsity has outscored its opponents 101-6.
Actually, since the tie they have allowed a goal against Farragut and one against Hutchison School. No one has scored more than one against Houston this season.
Wolff feels that his team is well balanced. Talent dispersed all over the field, and depth on the bench.
‘If you look at our team, you couldn’t really tell who our best player is,” he said in a story by the Commerical Appeal in Memphis.
The Mustangs aren’t the only Tennessee team in the NSCAA fall national rankings. Father Ryan, also unbeaten at 16-0-3, is ranked #21.
Father Ryan is top-seeded in the four-team Class II AA tournament. University School Jackson is the #1 team in Class II A with a 17-2-1 season mark.
Knoxville Catholic High School holds the top spot in the Class A-AA state poll on EUROSPORT scoreboard.com.
Knox Catholic is 18-3-4 overall with second-place Hume-Fogg Academic 13-4-0.
Houston goes into the AAA state tournament with an eye on another championship, but there is danger throughout the draw.
Dobyns-Bennett and Franklin meet in their quarterfinal match, each with only two losses this season. The winner plays the winner of Houston vs. Oakland.
On the other end of the draw is twice-bean Farragut, which plays Cooksville for the opportunity to play either Collierville or Ravenwood (12-1-4) in the semifinal.
Opening games begin on Wednesday Oct. 30 with the state championship games set for Saturday, Nov. 2.
