When the Oct. 22 national rankings for senior college women’s teams were released by the NSCAA, the top ranked team in the state of Florida was Northwood University.
The Northwood Lady Seahawks were ranked #2 in the NAIA poll.
Northwood University is a private university with campuses in Midland, Michigan, Cedar Hill, TX, and West Palm Beach, FL. The one in Michigan opened first in 1961, The Palm Beach cam- pus is the newest, having opened in 1984.[show_to]
The mission statement for the University is very straight forward: “The mission of Northwood University is to develop the future leaders of a global, free-enterprise society.”
Reaching #2 in the national poll was a milestone for the Lady Seahawks, who had been #4 the previous week. They enter the final weeks of the Sun Conference with a 12-1-1 record, and have a 34-game unbeaten streak in Sun Conference play, dating back to 2009.
“I’m very pleased for the team,” said Northwood head coach Mat Dunn. “They earned this with an all-around team effort.”
They closed out their regular season home schedule with a 7-1 win over Warner University. Senior forward Helen Lynskey (England) had a hat trick in the win.
Northwood plays mostly schools in Florida and Georgia and does it with an international roster. Lynskey is the leading goalscorer with 18, while Johanna Engberg, a freshman from Sweden, has scored 13.
Eighteen of the top 23 players are internationals, mostly from England and Sweden..
