It would appear that former U.S. MNT coach Bob Bradley’s adventure in Egypt will last one more game.
As coach of Egypt’s men’s national team, Bradley had his team in a final two-game series with Ghana, the winner advancing to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The run of the Pharoahs had captured the hearts of Egypt’s soccer faithful.
Those hearts were broken in a 6-1 away loss to Ghana in the first-leg of the final qualifying series. The[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’]y have the return leg, but have no chance to recover and make up the difference which will be determined by goal aggregate.
Also, it is no sure thing that the return game will actually be played in Egypt, and if it is, that fans will be allowed to attend.
Ghana has asked FIFA to move the second-leg from Egypt because of safety fears. FIFA has given EFA until Oct. 28 to provide security guarantees.
After the loss there were questions about whether Bradley would be fired. Not so much because of the magnitude of the loss, but for security reasons.
However, Egypt soccer association chairman Gamal Allam has said that “it is not logical to sack (Bradley) and pay a big fine for the last match of his contract.”
Bradley’s contract was to run through World Cup qualifying. If he were fired before the last game, the EFA would have to pay $360,000 in compensation to Bradley.
There also have been rumors that Bradley may not be on the sidelines if the second-leg game is played in Cairo on Nov. 19. There were many fans who were angered and disappointed by the result in Kumasi, which was considered to be a humiliating result.
Airport security was increased for the team’s return from Ghana. A threat of violence comes from a number of fringe groups, including Ahly Ultras, a fans’ group which tried to attack the Ahly handball team after it was beaten in the Champions Handball League by a Tunisian side.
