In an unusual move going into a World Cup year, US Soccer signed U.S. Men’s National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann to a contract extension. The extension is for four years, keeping him as the U.S. coach through the 2018 World Cup[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’].
Klinsmann, 49, who led the U.S. men to a 16-4-2 record in 2013, winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup and finishing first in the regional World Cup qualification hexagonal.
Even before the World Cup, rumors of interest from Switzerland and the Tottenham Hotspur have surfaced.
“We’ve obviously read some of those things,” said US Soccer President Sunil Gulati. “At a specific level, none of those things are critical to us.
“But certainly, the desire we have a longterm commitment to him and he has a longterm commitment to us was part of it, and market dynamics dictate some of that.”
Klinsmann is 27-10-7 since replacing Bob Bradley as U.S. coch in the summer of 2011.
With his new contract, he also becomes the Technical Director for all U.S. national teams.
