Go ahead and mark your 2014 calendar. If next year goes like the last four, you can be fairly confident the University of Montevallo Falcons will be playing the day the Peach Belt Conference settles its 2014 men’s soccer championship.
The Falcons have been there the past four seasons, and a 2-0 victory over Francis Marion this past fall made it three championships out of those four finals.
After back-and-forth action early in the game, the Falcons went up 1-0 when leading scorer Ricky Davey scored his eighth goal of the year at the 26:50 mark. He finished a corner kick from Jeffrey Hessenberger.
In the second half Montevallo continued to dominate the match and less than 10 minutes after halftime, the Falcons doubled their lead when Bruno Mbamala got on another ball from Hessenberger
Hessenberger, a freshman from Germany, had an outstanding tournament, assisting on all four goals in the semifinals and championship game.
The Falcons finished the season 11-8. They were the #7 seed in the Peach Belt Conference tournament, but came alive to eliminate Lander and Flagler to reach the title game.
Davey and fellow seniors Gary O’Neill and Brendan Ledgeway were named to the NSCAA Division II Men’s Southeast Region Team. O’Neill was on the second team, while Davey and Ledgeway were third team.
