For the first time in 19 years, Old Dominion University is looking for a new women’s head soccer coach.
Shortly after the end of the 2014 season, Joe Pereira resigned as head coach of the Lady Monarchs. In an oddly worded news release, ODU announced that “Pereira Vacates Soccer Position.”
Pereira has been the ODU coach since 1995 and over 19 seasons his teams have posted a total of 152 wins (152-173-31). How[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’]ever, the Lady Monarchs have not had a winning season since 2008 when ODU went 14-4-2.
This past fall ODU was 1-13-3.
Pereira accepted the ODU position after spending 10 seasons as head women’s coach at Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC.
Pereira led ODU to the Colonial Athletic Association championship in 2006 and to an appearance in the NSCAA playoffs. ODU posted a 17-5-1 mark that year.
ODU has announced a national search for a new head coach, and has named current assistant Joe Tedesco as the Interim Head Coach.
With the women’s collegiate soccer season just concluding, the ODU opening is just one of a series of positions that are expected to open soon.
Loyola Fires Vettori
Loyola University Maryland has decided not to renew the contract of Katherine Remy Vettori which expired at the end of the 2013 season.
Vettori, who played collegiate soccer at Duke, coached the Greyhounds for six seasons, posting a 56-49-18 record with two trips to the NCAA tournament. The Greyhounds were 2-11-4 overall this past season with a 1-6-2 record in the Patriot League.
Loyola assistant coach Emily Janss will serve as the Loyola Interim Head Coach.
One open coaching position was filled when former N.C. State women’s head coach Steve Springthorpe was hired by Tennessee Tech. Springthorpe spent the past season as an assistant on the Duke University coaching staff.
