TC Roberson, Marvin Ridge, Salisbury and Wallace Rose Hill came away with NCHSAA boys state soccer championships with finals held at Dail Soccer Field on the campus of N.C. State University.
Class 4-A Champions
Cam Wood finished a header in the 66th minute of play to give Asheville T.C. Roberson a 2-1 victory over Raleigh Sanderson for the NCHSAA Class 4-A title.
Wood’s goal came off a throw-in from Connor Cowan to give the Rams a 27-0-2 undefeated season and their third state title. It was their first at the 4-A level.
Senior forward Austin Starney, who scored Roberson’s first goal early in the first half, was named MVP.
Sanderson (23-7-1) tied the game in the first minute of the second half on an own-goal that deflected off a Roberson defender and into the net.
Bot[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’]h finalists have long histories of state championship success. Sanderson was in the final for the 14th time and had won or shared 11 state soccer titles. However, it was the Spartans’ first trip to the championship game since 1996.
3-A Champions
Eleven goals were scored by Waxhaw Marvin Ridge and defending state champion Jacksonville before Marvin Ridge came away with a 6-5 decision for the Class 3-A state title.
It was the highest scoring NCHSAA men’s soccer final in history. Four goals were scored in the final four minutes of play.
The game-winner came with only 1:27 left in regulation from Klint Parker. It was his 24th on the season.
Jacksonville opened the game with a goal from Tyler Moore in the first three minutes, but the Mavericks came back with four unanswered goals for a 4-1 lead.
Senior midfielder Kyle Enoch, who had two goals and an assist for Marvin Ridge, was named the game’s MVP.
Moore had two goals for Jacksonville (20-5-1), while Will Green had a goal and three assists for Marvin Ridge (22-1-1).
2-A Champions
Salisbury made it to the Class 2-A championship game for second time in three year and this time won the state title.
The Hornets downed First Flight 2-1 with senior midfielder Bobby Cardelle knocking in the winning goal in the 48th minute. It was Cardelle’s 45th goal of the season. He also assisted on the first goal and was named Most Valuable Player of the match.
The loss was the first of the season for First Flight which ended the year 23-1. It marked First Flight’s first appearance in the state championship game.
The Nighthawks took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of a goal by junior midfielder Jay Cueva. Emmy Turcios’ 25th goal of the season tied the game for Salisbury.
The Hornets ended the season with a 25-match winning streak and a 27-1 overall record.
1-A Champions
Senior goalkeeper Viktor Hansson came up big on both ends of the field to lead Wallace-Rose Hill to its first state soccer championship.
Hansson made a key save in a penalty kick shootout and then scored the game-winner as the Bulldogs edged North Moore 3-2 after regulation ended tied 2-2.
Hansson saved a penalty kick in regulation and then stopped the Mustangs’ first attempt in the shootout. He finished Wallace Rose Hill’s fifth and final PK for a 4-3 shootout advantage.
North Moore led most of the way in regulation, but the Bulldogs tied the game with only eight seconds showing on the clock to draw even at 2-2 on senior Phillip Trappe’s second goal of the day.
Junior forward Pedro Ugarte scored both of North Moore’s goals.
Hansson was named MVP of the 1-A title match. Both teams were playing in the championship game for the first time in program histories.
Wallace-Rose Hill ended the season with a 13-match winning streak and a 23-3 record. The loss snapped a nine-match winning streak for the Mustangs, who finished 20-4-1.
