Northern Virginia-based Virginia Calvary FC will delay the launch of its entry into the North American Soccer League for another year[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’].
Delays in completing a 5,500-seat stadium in Loudoun County, which would also be home to a baseball team, has resulted in both teams withdrawing for another year.
The Loudoun County club had considered playing at least part of the 2014 season at a temporary home, perhaps George Mason University.
“Having exhausted numerous alternative Northern Virginia venues, it is best for the team and the League to wait one more year to begin playing,” said Joe Tavez, the team’s principal owner.
The NASL will play the 2014 season with 10 teams. The Indy Eleven in Indianapolis, Ind., and Canada’s Ottawa Fury join the league next year.
Virginia Calvary FC will be joined in 2015 by expansion teams in Jacksonville, Fla., and Oklahoma City, Okla., when the league goes to 13.
