Wambach and U.S. WNT teammate Alex Morgan are two of the three finalists for FIFA World Player of the Year. The[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’] all-time leading scorer, who set that record this past season, breaking Mia Hamm’s old record and establishing a new one with 163 career goals, was named US Soccer Female Player of the Year.
Jozy Altidore, who has re-established himself as a go-to scorer with the U.S. MNT, was named US Soccer Male POY.
When the inaugural CONCACAF annual awards were announced, Wambach was #2 on the list, just behind Morgan.
To commemorate U.S. Soccer’s 100th anniversary year, Wambach’s dramatic game-tying goal in the closing minutes of stoppage time against Brazil in the 2011 World Cup quarterfinals has been voted the best moment in U.S. soccer history.
Wambach’s goal, a header off a cross from Megan Rapinoe, came with the Americans less than two minutes from World Cup elimination. The U.S. went on to win that match on penalty kicks, before losing in the final on PKs to Japan.
