Florida narrowly edged Texas A&M as the favorite to claim the 2014 Southeastern Conference women’s soccer title in voting by the league’s 14 head coaches. This marks the 16th time that Florida has been tabbed by the coaches to win the title.
The Gators received 164 points that included eight first-place votes, topping the Aggies’ 162 points (six first-place votes). Florida and Texas A&M shared the 2013 SEC title by posting identical 9-2-0 league records.
Florida returns 11 starters from last season, including MAC Hermann Award candidates Savannah Jordan, Havana Solaun and Christen Westphal. Texas A&M returns 10 starters from 2013, of which five were All-SEC selections, including first-teamers Shea Groom and Meghan Streight and second-teamers Jordan Day, Leigh Edwards and Kelley Monogue.
Points were compiled on a 13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, though each coach was not allowed to vote for their own team.
The 22nd season of women’s soccer in the SEC season began August 22.
