Norwegian-American Mix Diskerud, a member of the 2014 U.S. World Cup team, has signed with New York City FC on a free transfer after his Rosenborg pro contract expired.
Diskerud, who has 25 caps, is the third World Cup team member to leave his foreign club for MLS after DaMarcus Beasley (Houston) and Jermaine Jones (New England) since the end of the tournament. Diskerud did not play in the four U.S. matches. He has been in the January training camp that began Monday in Carson, California.
“We couldn’t be happier to have Mix coming to play in New York,” said NYCFC sporting directorClaudio Reyna. “He’s one of the brightest young talents in US soccer and will be a fantastic addition to our Club and to MLS. Mix is a dynamic midfielder who will easily fit into the style we want to play here in New York City. He keeps possession well and gets everyone involved with his passing range.”
Diskerud will join a NYCFC midfield that includes Ned Grabavoy and Sebastian Velasquez from Real Salt Lake, NYCFC coach Jason Kreis’ former club, Andrew Jacobson, who had played on loan in Norway after his acquisition from FC Dallas, MLS veteran Mehdi Ballouchy and second-year players Daniel Lovitz and Thomas McNamara (D.C. United), in addition to Frank Lampard who should arrive in July.
“New York City FC have made my wish as an American a reality by giving me the opportunity to play and live in the U.S.,” said Diskerud, who was born and raised in Norway to an American mother and Norwegian father, “Everybody I have spoken to on the men’s national team about Jason Kreis has spoken highly of him to me. I felt exactly the same way after meeting him. I’m sure he will help me to develop my game, to succeed with our team here in New York and to stay involved with the national team. Coming to play for New York City FC was an easy decision for me.”
