Gerry McKeown was born in the United Kingdom. In the city of Glasgow to be exact, where he played his first soccer game. Over the years, he has played and coached all over the world.
He has been the Executive Director of the Players Development Academy since 2001 and the Director of U.S. Club Soccer’s Id2 Program since 2007, helping elite youth soccer players to have the opportunity to be identified, developed and scouted by U.S. Soccer. He has also worked with the U15 and U18 U.S. National Teams, as well as the New Jersey and Region I Olympic Development Programs.
His parents immigrated to the U.S. when he was a teenager, settling in New Jersey. He played club soccer for Thistle FC and high school soccer at Kearny High School, a path also taken by US. National Team stars John Harkes and Tony Meola.
As a player he was All-ACC in 1980 for the NC State Wolfpack. He played two years at State, helping the Wolfpack earn their first NCAA tournament appearance, after two-years of JUCO All-America soccer at Mercer County Community.
He played pro soccer in North Carolina with the Carolina Lighten and with the Charlotte Gold.
McKeown has taken a group of 17 players born in 2006 and one born in 2006 from 18 soccer clubs in the USA on the 2019 id2 National international Tour for games against four top academies in Belgium and France (March 29-April 9). Eighteen players from 17 clubs make up the roster, which consists of 17 players born in 2005 and one born in 2006.
