Darren Powell is out as head coach of ULS Championship San Antonio FC. He had held that job since 2016 when the club was launched.
The team failed this past season to make the playoffs for the third time in four years, dropping to 11th in the standings in the final week of the regular season.
Powell, who was an outstanding collegiate player at UNC Greensboro, took the expansion ULS job after being in charge of the Development Academy for MLS Orlando City. Prior to that he was the men’s head coach at Elon University. Previous to that, he was the men’s head coach at Greensboro College.
In making the announcement, SAFC managing director Tim Holt said,” We are grateful for all of Darren’s hard work over the past four seasons, and the passion and class with which he has served San Antonio FC and our city.”
Over the four seasons Powell’s teams posted a 53-43-36 league record.
A native of Nottingham, England, Powell played at UNCG from 1998-2000 and was the Spartans’ team captain. He was the first UNCG player to score more than 100 career points at the Division I level. He is 12th on the program’s all-time scoring list with 104 points, with 41 goals and 22 assists.
