Conference USA.
The Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week was Kentucky senior Matt Lodge (England), who scored one of the biggest goals of his decorated career in leading the Wildcats to a 1-0 win at Louisville. His third goal of the year came on a free kick from just outside of the 18-yard mark, curling around the wall and past the diving goalkeeper at the far post. It was Lodge’s 20th career goal, and came in front of 5,583, the largest crowd to ever watch a UK men’s soccer game.
Jaime Ibara, SMU junior goalkeeper, and Kentucky’s junior goalkeeper Jack Van Arsdale (Richmond, VA), shared the league’s Defensive Player of the Week award. Van Arsdale made six saves against the Cardinals for his first career shutout.
Memphis sophomore Kylie Davis (Quebec, Canada) and Rice freshman Holly Hargreaves each registered two game-winning goals for their respective teams in the opening weekend of C-USA play to earn Women’s Offensive Player of the Week honors. East Carolina junior keeper Christiane Cordero (Valencia, Calif.) picked up a pair of shutout wins to take the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week award. The weekly honors are career first for all three.
Davis scored the golden goal in the Tigers’ 2-1 win over #6 Central Florida. She scored just two minutes into overtime. Cordero picked up a pair of shutout wins over the weekend against UTEP and Colorado College to help the Pirates to their first 2-0 start in league play since the 2008 season.
