Chicago Wins Challenge; Battery Beats Houston

March 15, 2013 by Ray Alley

The Chicago Fire captured the 2013 Carolina Challenge Cup weeklong round-robin championship for the first time. The Fire won the preseason tournament with a 1-0 tie with the Vancouver Whitecaps on the last night of the tournament hosted by the Charleston Battery.
The host Battery, the only non-Major League Soccer club in the group, finished their week with a 2-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo, runnerup for the 2012 MLS Cup title.
After Houston took a 1-0 lead, Charleston came back to equalize, and then won the game on a header off a corner kick by Austin Savage in the 75th minute.
The star of the match was Battery goalkeeper, Odisnel Cooper, who made a number of key saves, including stopping penalty kick by Brad Davis.
