Bruce Dietterle and Jeremy Hampton had the responsibilities, and now they have the titles.
The University of Montevallo took away the word “interim” from their job descriptions and officially named them the new men’s and women’s head soccer coaches, respectively.
Dietterle is the fourth full-time head coach in the 19-year history of the men’s program. He had rejoined the Falcons in February after spending one season as an assistant at Stetson University.
He previously spent two years as an assistant coach with the Falcons, helping the team to a 30-7-6 record during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Included was Montevallo’s first Peach Belt Conference tournament championship.
He also served as an assistant coach at Pfeiffer University and was part of the North Carolina Olympic Development Program.
“I am very excited and honored to take over a program with the tradition and history that we have at the University of Montevallo,” said Dietterle, who replaces Ken Hassler, who resigned earlier this year to become women’s head soccer coach at Catawba College.
Hampton becomes the program’s third head coach in the 17-year history of the program. He became the interim head coach five months ago following the promotion of longtime Montevallo head coach Patricia Hughes to Assistant Athletic Director for External Relations.
Hughes had been the program’s head coach for the past 12 seasons.
“It’s a tremendous honor to be joining such a prestigious academic institution and an athletic department with a rich tradition of success,” said Hampton.
Hampton had been Hughes’ assistant for just one season, and focused on the team’s defense. He was the assistant women’s coach at the University of Alabama from 2005-2008.
He also brings the perspective of a high school coach to his new Montevallo duties, having served as head coach at Pascagoula High School in Pascagoula, Miss., in 2011, before coming to the Falcons as an assistant.
Prior to the season at Pascagoula, Hampton served as the head women’s soccer coach at Marion Military Institute from 2008-2011, where he started that program.
